Auguste Rodin, 1840 - 1917

As a teenager he applied three times to study at an art school and was rejected on each occasion. When he was eighteen, distressed by the death of his sister Marie, he joined a sacred order. It was while there that his artistic talents were recognized, the talents that would see him become one of the world's most famous sculptors.

 The Age of Bronze (Detail)

Rodin created this work after a study-trip to Italy where he was strongly affected by works of Michelangelo.

The Kiss

The sad story of Paolo and Francesca was told in Dante's epic poem. Francesca was married to Lord of Rimini but fell in love with young Paolo. Just as they exchanged their first kiss, Francesca's husband arrived and stabbed the two lovers to death. Above is Rodin's rendition of the legend.

Rose Beuret

At the age of 24 Rodin met a seamstress named Rose Beuret, who would become his life-long companion and the model for many of his works. Rodin married Rose Beuret on 29 January, 1917, fifteen days before Rose's death and ten months before his own demise. The two were buried in a tomb dominated by what is probably the most well-known of all Rodin creations, The Thinker.
