Augustus, real name Octavian or Gaius Julius Caesar Actavianus.  As his name suggests, he was a relative of Roman general and dictator Julius Caesar--grandnephew and adopted son.

Upon the assassination of Caesar in the 34th year before the Christian Era, young Octavian was selected to succeed him.  Although initially not taken seriously by some of Caesar's generals, including powerful men such as Mark Antony and Lepidus, the 18-year-old leader soon proved his prowess, eventually defeating all his rivals.  It was in 31 BC that Octavian vanquished Antony along with his ally the Egyptian queen Cleopatra.   It was thereafter that Octavian came to be known by his title Augustus, "the revered," and effectively became the founder of the Roman Empire.

The little fellow clinging to him is Cupid, son of goddess Venus.  This indicated Octavian's alleged divine origin, that his clan descended from Venus.
