How many gals, how many guys?

4 women and 9 men.  When the two friends did the counting, each of the two excluded himself or herself but included the person who came with him or her--yes, one of these two friends was male and the other female.  So when the man counted, he included the lady who came with him but left himself out.  He thus got a counting of 4 women and 8 men, a total of 12.  4 out of 12 is one-third.  Similarly, the lady counted in the friend with her but excluded herself and thus saw 3 girls and 9 guys.  3 out of 12 13 one-fourth.  The total number of the people at the party was 13.

For a party that does nothing but counting, that's a pretty good turnout.

On the other hand, 13?
